Creating your own Backyard Biergarten at your home can be tons of fun, especially when family, close friends and all your neighbors can share in the enjoyment of it all.
Your own Backyard Biergarten is a real fun project to create and you really can make it as simple or elaborate as you may wish. After all, it is your backyard.
The first part of creating a viable Biergarten in your backyard is knowing the history of Biergartens in Germany. It is true that Biergartens originated in the 19th century in Munich, the capital of the German state of Bavaria.
The large breweries back then dug cellars in the banks near rivers to keep their beer cool during storage. During both the Spring and Summer months they would bring the beer out to enjoy under shade trees in a natural setting outdoors.
So to start the creation of a Biergarten in your backyard, you will first need some shade, whether by a tree or maybe a cool patio umbrella. Most people I know that have done this prefer a “German Beer”logo patio umbrella. Of course you can have the shade tree plus the patio umbrella.
A picnic table or patio table with chairs would be next on your list for guest to mingle. Are you looking for a real authentic Biergarten table and bench? They are available online but can be a bit pricy too.
My next suggestion is to create a floral garden. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but you guest will really appreciate the “garden” aspect of your project. You can start with brilliant red geraniums in clay pots. In the garden itself you need to put in some colorful variety with assorted blends and shades of purple, pink, white and yellow.
Popular “Biergarten” type flowers that tend to enhance this theme (within most of the USA) are impatient’s, vinca, both assorted white & yellow daisies with some delphinium. It’s also nice to put in some colorful gerbera daisies too. Mix in some dahlia’s, petunia’s and of course towards the mid fall months, make certain chrysanthemum’s are in place to ready your backyard Biergarten for a backyard Oktoberfest.
If you can string up some outdoor patio lights above your new backyard Biergarten, that would be really cool. Throw in a Garden Gnome or two to help you keep an eye on things.
Proper signage is very important. I discovered a few places that will create and personalize some outdoor décor signs just to your liking, in a German Biergarten/Oktoberfest theme.
You know it’s your duty to create a real “Gemütlichkeit” look and feel environment for your guest whenever they visit your inviting backyard Biergarten.
Can you guess the last thing you need to bring it all together?
That’s right, the beer! You really can’t have a great Biergarten without the beer. I usually select my top five favorite German beers brands and have them stocked in a cooler. I then fire up the nearby grill, put on a few brats and the party is on!
~ Prost! (cheers)
